WHAT IS DENTAL SEDATION?

Sedation is an anaesthesia method which is widely used in dentistry in order to reduce patient anxiety and to treat patients with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy. During the sedation, patients are in a half-awake state and are able to communicate with the dentist. However, patients do not remember the dental procedure later on.

There are 3 methods to treat a patient under sedation.

1. ORAL SEDATION:
Oral sedation is a needle-free sedation method. It works by taking a prescribed dose of sedative medicine before starting the dental procedure. The drug takes 40 minutes to 1 hour to kick in and work. Therefore, patients need to arrive to clinic 1 hour earlier than the normal appointment time and wait until the sedative drug begins working.

Patients stay concious during the oral sedation. However, they are not fully aware of what is going on in the room. Unlike the Intravenous Sedation, it is not possible to control and remove the effects of the pills.

2. INTRAVENOUS SEDATION
Intravenous sedation is achieved by the injection of sedative drugs through a cannula to the vein circulation. IV sedation’s effects start within seconds after the injection of sedative drugns and the procedure can be managed easily by the anesthetics specialists. Although patients are conscious, they are not fully aware of the things going around in the surgery room.
IV sedation can be terminated whenever it is necessary by giving some other medicines to the patient. It takes only a few minutes for the effects of the sedation to disappear. However, patients should be monitored even after the termination of sedation. In ESTETİK İNCİM Dental Centre, once we complete the treatment under sedation, we take patients to the observation room to sleep it off for a couple of hours.

3. INHALATION SEDATION (NITROUS OXIDE, LAUGHING GAS)
Inhalation sedation is the lightest form of sedation which is achieved by inhaling the gas through a mask throughout the dental procedure. The gas that we use in dentistry in Turkey is same as the gas used in labour by pregnant women. The gas makes the procedure quite comfortable and reduces the anxiety levels dramatically. Effects of the Nitrous oxide disappear quickly after the procedure without requiring any additional actions by the dentist / anesthetics specialist. Patients remain conscious during the inhalation gas sedation procedure and they are more aware of the things going around them compared to other methods.

WILL I NEED LOCAL ANAESTHESIA WITH SEDATION?
The short answer to this is yes. Dental Sedation and local anaesthesia are seperate procedures. Even though sedation reduces anxiety and keeps patient calm, it does not numb the tooth which will be treated. Therefore, once the sedation start showing it’s effect, our dentists apply local anaesthesia to the tooth to prevent any pain during the procedure.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FEEL PAIN DURING MY DENTAL TREATMENT UNDER SEDATION?
Patients are able to communicate with their dentists during the treatment under sedation. In case of any pain, they are able to inform the dentist about the pain. In this case, our dentist may administer more local anaesthetic to the area to achieve the desired numbness.

SEDATION IN ESTETİK İNCİM DENTAL CENTRE TURKEY
All sedation methods are available in ESTETİK İNCİM Dental Centre and performed by only the specialist doctors. Our anesthetics specialist Dr. Sibel Kigili is an expert in her field. She examines the medical history of every patient with care to understand if there are any risks to continue with the sedation method which will be used for the patient.

We regularly perform combined sedation which is a combination of oral sedation and iv sedation. Patients take a low dose of oral sedative 30-40 minutes before starting the IV sedation and the dental procedure.

A detailed medical (allergies, systemic diseases, medicines etc.) and social (Drugs, Smoking, Alcohol etc.) history of the patient will prevent any complications for the sedation procedure. Therefore, we obtain these crucial information from all our patients under discretion.
